The Great Athens

Everyone can agree that Athens is an interesting city. Blessed with a rich cultural and historical past, the city is the subject of many known. Socrates once said, “True wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world around us” and he also said, “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” You have to take everything wrong and find the good in it. What makes Athens a great place?

Athens is located on the Attic Peninsula and its surrounded by mountains and sea to the West. The plains of Attica provides good farming and the mountains protect against enemies. The climate is Mediterranean. Winters are mild and wet, summers are hot and dry, temperature rarely falls below freezing. Rainfall occurs around October and May. And mild climates all year around. Pollution controls were introduced to limit the damage caused by the automobiles and by industrial pollution. There’s many historical and cultural sites. Buildings were burned and most houses destroyed. They replaced shrines with large stone temples, Acropolis was rebuilt in gleaming white marble beginning in 449 bc. Large, richly decorated temple was dedicated to Athena and contained a huge statue of the goddess. Most temples were left destroyed as a reminder of peace with Persia.

Athens celebrated New Years, Independence Day, Good Friday, Easter, Labour Day, just like us. But they celebrate Epiphany, Clean Monday, and Monday of the Holy Spirit, and we don’t. Most people in Athens are ethnic Greeks, some are foreign-born. Christians denominations are represented in small numbers. Islam is the largest non-christian region. About 100,000 Muslims live in the greater Metropolitan Area. The temple of Athens Nike on the Southwestern Corner of the Acropolis, an altar to the goddess in this role was dedicated on this spot in 566 bc, on top of a Mycenaean baston. Most other food are not like ours, they eat Tzatziki, Dolmades, Souvlaki, Gyros, Halves, Loukoumades, Pastitsio, Revani, and the drinks are mostly alcohol like, Ouzo and Retsina.

In Athens the population in the city area in 2011 was 655,780 and in the metropolitan area was 3,168,036. 2018 the population in the city is 3,046,000. The first ancient Greek civilizations appeared around 1600 bc, with the Mycenaean civilization on the Greek island of Crete often being acted as the earliest. Ancient Greek went into decline around 30 bc, when the Roman Empire became the Western world’s most powerful political and military force. Around 508 bc, Athens became the world’s first known democracy, Greece was ruled by different groups in 338 bc, the Macedonians took over. 1829 Greece became independent. Then in 1456 Greece was invaded by Turks 400 years Greece was part of the Ottoman Empire. Greek mythology went on to become a popular source of artistic inspiration during the Europe Renaissance. The geographic boundaries of Classical Greece were fluid, as the civilization was a conglomeration of city-states and not a unified political entity. Modern city developed around this older core, which became known as Plaka. The city suffered terribly during World War II and for several years after the war, when Greece was embroiled in civil war. The economy rebounded in the 1950s and early 1960s, until political turmoil caused a depression. Many automobiles especially taxis, caused air pollution at levels that threatened not only the public health but also the city’s ancient monuments.

Plato was born in Athens, Greece around 427 bc. He was an important thinker, teacher, and writer. Plato wrote 35 works and a group of letters. He shared ideas about the soul, art, and government. One of his most famous works is The Republic.

Maria Callas was a world famous opera singer. She was born in New York on December 2nd, 1923. In 1937, Callas and her parents returned to Greece, she studied her music there.
