Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Writing Assignment
I enjoy the most watching Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by the book, because while the books are absolute works of art, the movies had some spice the books were lacking. There are some scenes in the movie that weren’t in the book, for example like, in the movie, the museum glass vanished, and Dudley fell inside and got trapped like a total git. In the book, he left backwards and the snake slithered away like a boss. Also, Harry drew his own birthday cake in the dirt and blew out the imaginary candles, in the movie. However, in the book, he counted down on Dudley’s watch wondering if the Dursleys would remember his birthday or if they would care at all. Of course the he answer was no. But that’s not to say I hated movie of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, because casting and music, also the script were all very splendid. I loved how certain places and people had their own unique theme song. The opening scene, Hogwarts, Voldemort, Diagon Alley, etc. It brought such comfort to hear these songs again, and I wished more movies did that. Though I felt the book-to-movie adaption was done really well, but I was left missing a couple of scenes. For one, is about Norbert’s actual storyline and how Harry and Hermione transferred the baby dragon to Charlie and his friends rather than Dumbledore making Hagrid get rid of Norbert. Therefore, the movie was as exciting as the book, but I more enjoy Harry Potter and Sorcerer’s Stone by reading the book.
The book gave us many details of portrayal of the characters, however, I feel more connected with characters in the movie. Although the movie has missed a lot of scenes, but special effects and the music also actors’ acting fascinated me. As I mentioned above, certain places and people in the movie had their own unique theme song. For example in opening scene, Hogwarts, Voldemort, Diagon Alley, etc. If I hear that unique theme song, I can tell for sure that it is a Harry Potter movie and it also make me very excited. Though the background music was great, but the special effects were more incredible. In my case, I read the book first and then saw the movie, so I just imagined the scene that in my head as I read it. Of course, it was more wonderful than I imagined in the movie. And I think it is all thanks to the special effects. Lastly, I felt there were some really great and talented people for this movie. All the major characters were great versions of the book characters. I loved the trio, the professors, and almost all secondary characters. The chemistry between Harry, Ron, and Hermione was great and very fitting. Honestly, I can’t say enough how much I loved the casting of Harry Potter. Therefore, the movie let me feel more connected with characters.
When I saw the movie, I found out that there are many differences with novel of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The book, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, had many characters that the movie didn’t. Some of these characters include: Peeves, Irma Prince, Piers Polkiss, Professor Binns, Augusta Longbottom, Hermes, Pomona Sprout, Madam Malkin, Ronan, Terry Boot, Padma Patil, Hannah Abbott, Narcissa Malfoy, Lucius Malfoy, and Bane. Peeves is a poltergeist and in the book he had a very important role of being a nuisance to students and teachers by throwing water balloons at them and making rude comments towards them. By not including Peeves in the movie the story line was somewhat changed because there were many scenes in which Peeves played an important role. Some of these scenes include the part where Peeves yelled to Argus Filch (the caretaker) that students were out of bed and were supposed to be given a detention. In my opinion, I think the director made these changes because the book is very long, but the movie cannot take so long, so the director only can shorten the plot. Therefore, there are many changes between the movie and the book.
If I could recast or change the main characters in the movie, I will fire Fiona Shaw, Richard Griffiths and Harry Melling who acted Petunia Dursley, Vernon Dursley and Dudley Dursley. As I mentioned above, so many things in the book are changed in the movie or parts are left out of the movie completely. For one, in the book, author mentioned that Dursleys family are all blond. However, in the movie, the actors and actress who acted Dursley family were all black hair. So in the order to make the movie more real, I think change the actors and actress who has blond hair to act the Dursleys family will be a great idea. I would hire Blake Lively to act Petunia Dursley, Johnny Depp act Vernon Dursley and Thomas Sangster to act Dudley Dursley. Also they all have experience of acting bad character in the movie, because Dursleys family are all mean people, so I believe they will be very fit on this characters.
