In the beginning, I did not know what to expect after I completed the (IATs)- Implicit Association Tests. As I have never seen a test setup in this way. When I started the test I did not understand how the system could determine the decision off of my answers. Once I got my results after the first test, it was very surprising the system concluded the opposite based on my answers. The IATs want to see how quick n individual can answer the question between groups. This will determine a person is a prejudice. The two tests I took are race and age.
Explicit biases are defined as a conscious manner. You will often think about your action. Implicit biases are the way people are more aware that the effect of someone attitude that is an unconscious manner. Even though, we have explicit and implicit cognitive bias within us because we are a human being. This what shapes our actions and attitudes. An explicit bias can be controlled in a respectful manner. However, implicit bias are natural which sometimes it is not avoidable due to the experience.
The purpose of the IATs is used to measure the strength of association concepts between concepts and stereotypes. The test mainly wants to see how quickly a person can response of human nature in a possible way. Because the IATs was used for research, it can bring awareness to a person that might be biased and don’t know he or she is. By doing so, the IATs will help a person to make a decision about themselves before it leads an unintended consequence that may be unjustified. Implicit biases analysis the behavior of an individual. It seems there is some mix of emotion how implicit bias causes the behavior of a person. There’s no evidence to prove the theory to come to a conclusion about how people determine the changes in behavior. Even though implicit bias is measured by a person behavior, the test basically informs us how to do something and give us other options of how we view the world. According to (Barlett, 2017) stated that “So if there’s little evidence to show that changing implicit bias is a useful way of changing those behaviors”.
I first thought the test was asking questions like a survey questionnaire until I got the concept of what has been asked. The two tests I took was an eye open of how I view a person in a certain way without getting to know the person. I also thought of others that fall into the groups of what they may be going through as well. I never looked at it in this way. By taking this test, I have learned if someone is biased they can change if he or she wants to. It’s not something a person have to do. The results out of the two tests, I was shocked about age groups young people over old people. The IATs suggests a moderate preference whereas, I particularly preference old people over young people. The second test result suggests a slight preference for African American over European Americans which I was delighted with the results. In all, the data showed me that I am some what bias to obviously. I need to rethink how I view a person do to his or her age. There is some improvement in the category of old people and young people. After looking back, I think this test can help me be more cautious about bias awareness and the effect it may have on people that we don’t thoroughly think enough about. Also, I have to think if I spend more time with Old People would have my results could be the least bias if only I knew it would make a difference. I feel as if the bias cannot affect how I interact with Old People. It will help me to understand something that I was not aware of about myself of caring for others.
In my opinion, the IATs is valid. As mentioned in Chapter 10 in the course textbook in Unit 2 lesson, the concept of valid produce accurate results without systematic error. The test results are identified in a different type of validity of how the results are given. For example, the user data is put into three validity category such as internal, external, and face validity. To help understand the description of the three validity. The internal validity shows the total that specifies the variables in different results. External validity generalizes the study results from the outside. The face validity only shows if the data pass the test or not. Therefore, I think the IATs gives a valid concept of how the data from the results are used to determine different outcomes.
Prejudice is a negative attitude towards a person based on someone’s social group. Discrimination is the negative behavior on a person or group of people usually based on sex, race, or social class. Being prejudiced does not mean have an attitude. You can be prejudiced towards a certain group but not prejudice follows along with the three components of an attitude: affective behavioral and cognitive. On the other hand, discrimination just involves an unfair behavior directed against someone which shows the attitude of prejudice. Prejudice is a formation of impressions and interpretations about certain things whereas discrimination is the translation of it all and changing them into actions.
Yes, I do think to some degree that prejudices are inevitable because you will always have someone that has an opinion or has something to everyone is going to feel and think the same.
