The French Revolution was a landmark event in modern European history that began in 1789 and ended in the late 1790s with the ascent of Napoleon Bonaparte. The cataclysm was caused by extensive discontent with the French monarchy and the poor economic policies of King Louis XVI. It officially began on the 14th of July, 1789, when the Bastille, which was a image of the King’s harsh regulations, was stormed. The King, Louis XVI, the Queen, Marie-Antoinette and approximately 40,000 others were all brutally murdered.
One of the main catalysts, that helped ignite the fire that would become the French Revolution, was France’s financial situation. During the time of the before the French Revolution, France had incurred a large debt due to participation in the American Revolution and the Seven Year War.
